My very own hungry caterpillar…not really

Rockford Goes Green

A Lousy leaf eater

Eric Carle The Very Hungry Caterpillar

It's not easy being green

A couple of months ago when my son was obsessed with Eric Carle’s book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar“, he decided to act out his inner caterpillar during our family outing…not very clever.

On this given Friday evening, we opted to go out for dinner. We headed to our local Sizzler. I had ordered an “all you can eat” salad along with my meal so I let Rockford pick out a few things off my plate to explore and discover what items he liked. To my surprise, he opted to eat spinach leaves, but not without declaring, “I am a very hungry caterpillar and I have a tummy ache so I need to eat a leaf to feel better.”  I let him go to town with the spinach leaves and was actually excited he was eating them. However, the next thing I hear is Rockford coughing loudly as he gaged on the leaf.  His eyes got all watery so I immediately jammed my hand into his mouth to pull out the leaf he was choking on.  “No more spinach leaves ok?” I said to Rockford, not something I’d ever think to say to my kids. Rockford agreed.

A few minutes later I see Rockford picking up the same chewed up leaf he had been choking on that I had placed on a napkin. “What are you doing?” I asked, a little grossed out about it (but not too much quite frankly, I’m building tolerance with raising boys). His response, “I’m gonna take it home with me cause I’m a caterpillar.”

Needless to say, we did not let him bring that chewed up spinach leaf home with him and he never really became curious about eating green leafs after that. However, he still loves this book and I am glad it opened his eyes to eating new things. When you have a picky eater like this one, every little bit helps.

If your little one has yet to see or read this book, here it is for you both to enjoy.

HAVE A MARVELOUS MONDAY!!!

I am going to get this book tonight. Thanks for sharing. My little one is in the stage of trying to eat books so it could be worse.

Becky, that is great to hear. I loved the valuable lesson my son learned from here, “when you eat too much junk food you get a tummy ache”. I love how I can always refer to the caterpillar when he is asking for too many sweets 🙂

I loved this book when I was little … might need to piggy back on this idea — reading this book to the little one. I think she’s allergic to vegetables. :/

    Very cute story!

Oh, that is too cute! I’m going to pass this on to my sister-in-law; she has two hungry little caterpillars at home!
