Treasures or Junk? You decided…

19 Feb

On any given day my son Rockford will come up to me and say, “here you go mama, this is for you.” In his hand is usually some torn leaf, smashed pine cone or stone he randomly came across while outside.  As random and as useless a dead dried up old leaf or pine cone that has carelessly been stepped on may seem, I have kept it. Let me candidly share with you how my husband, Rocky feels about this.

I was looking for an ideal size vase to hold all my “findings” from Rockford when my husband asked, “what is that?’ I told him what these items were and how Rockford always picks me up something at the park, outside the library, or right outside our house. He replied, “why don’t you just throw them away?” “What?!” I said, or actually more like gasped. “Why would I throw them away? They are from my son who thought to pick them up and bring them to me.”  He added, “I would just throw them away.” Then I said, “That’s why he bring them to me and not you.”

This conversation was what sparked up that poll on what you would do with the trinkets that your toddler brings to you. Thank you to all who voted.

Here are the results:

Keep them until he/she is not looking then toss it     71%

Frame them forever                                                                 29%

Toss them immediately                                                            0%

What my kid never brings me anything!                            0%

Well it’s great to see that no one is simply tossing their kidlets findings…right away. Is there a limit to what types of things we should accumulate? How about how much of something we should accumulate?  My son seems to keep bringing me very organic materials so organic, it actually had a living creature in it. Here are some pictures to illustrate.

Here is the little creepy crawley

I wanted to go back to that conversation with my lovely husband and add the actual last line of that conversation. I said to him, “this coming from a man whose mother kept a cat’s skull that you manipulated  some way (the skull not the cat) when you were a kid and still has it.” Actually, not just still has it but proudly displays it on her book shelf. Take a took.

 WARNING!!!! IT IS VERY UGLY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well according to your votes, you only keep them until they are not looking, so he says he was right. I guess I stand alone on this one…or until the inside of my house starts looking like the outside, then I’ll really have to reconsider keeping all these findings. Until then, everything my son brings me will be a treasure finding, I’ll know he thought of me no matter how worthless the item may seem to those who stepped on it, I’ll know my son saw worth in it to bring it to me, and bring it with a proud smile.

Good for you, Raquel! I am very proud of you. I still have some things over 40 years old. I guess I will have to dispose of them one day soon, but until then – Memories.
    Love,
    Grandma Ann

I think the pinecone painting is a great idea Erika. Have your kid join in so he can see how much you value his gifts a great teaching opportunity for him to learn about thoughtfulness and being grateful for every gift. I might just have to steal that one 😉
