Father’s Day

Today is Father’s Day and we had a great day today celebrating my husband and my own father. We attended church where our Pastor delivered a beautiful Father’s Day message. He shared personal stories about him and his father. He also shared a story of former baseball player Harmon Killebrew.
Killebrew said, “My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, ‘You’re tearing up the grass.’ Dad would reply, ‘We’re not raising grass,’ ‘We’re raising boys.'”
This quote resonated with me because it reminded me of my own philosophy with my boys. The other day Rockford scratched our dinning table (a hand me down from my parents). My husband’s instinct reaction was to reprimand this behavior, as he is trying to preserve what we have. I just casually said something like, “It’s ok, it’s our ‘for now’ table while they are young. We can get a new one when they move out.” I guess I could relate to Killebrew’s father and I was so happy to hear this. Then again, this is what makes my husband and me a great balanced team.

We had a great time eating carne asada, beans, rice and tortillas at my brother Sergio’s home. We recalled old childhood stories of when we reprimanded by my dad and I was the only one who couldn’t recall one. I did learn of how determined, strong-willed and motivated I was as little girl and now I see a lot of those same attributes in my little one Rocco. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

I have learned that every father has his own style of fathering, but the most important thing is that they are there for their kid. For this reason I am thankful for my husband and my own father. Happy Father’s Day!!!
