Funny Dr. Visit

Kids make the mundane amusing

playing doctor
the lighter side of doctor visits

On this given occasion the actual doctor visit went as ordinary as it could be with two toddlers. As we were getting ready to leave we opted to make a quick bathroom stop…looking back, I would have opted to wait to get home, but you be the judge.

There is a restroom right before exiting the nurses stations to get to the waiting room. I thought we should make the stop since it was the nearest one and so we ventured in. I rolled in with my deluxe stroller, you know the type with the carseat on it. I was the one that needed to use the restroom so I kept Rocco in the stroller, forgetting that he had not been strapped back in since seeing the doctor. Not missing a beat, as soon as I sat down Rockford starts complaining that he too needs to pee and needs me off the toilet, so I hurry up as fast as I can while Rockford chants and jumps around the bathroom pushing every button and pulling everything in sight.  Before I can give him a warning on a particular button, he had already pushed the Nurse help button. There I am,trying to pull my pants up, trying to start scolding Rockford when Rocco decides to take a nosedive to the floor and start shreeking and then we hear a nurse at the door asking if we needed any assistance. The truth is I probably did, but calmly and graciously tell her everything is ok and to excuse my son’s curiosity (for pushing the button) and that my other son was ok. Still not fully dressed myself, I am consoling my one year old while Rockford decides the entire toilet seat, cover and actual toilet are the target for him.

Yeah, felt like this

We did finally make it out of that bathroom, only to get looks of concern from the nurses. As we make our exit into the waiting room I see another parent who had witnessed us going into the bathroom, so now he knew we were the one’s making all that commotion through what must be thin walls.  Yeah, I felt embarrassed. I don’t think we’ve ever made it  back to the car as fast as we did that day. Thank you kids for another memorable day at the doctor’s office.

“More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope[…]” ~Romans 5:3-4
Perhaps “suffering” here can be replaced with “humiliation or embarrassment”. I believe these experiences do produce endurance and the endurance has produced character, my sense of humor in parenting. This gives me hope that I will become a more effective parent and not sweat the little things like these embarrassing moments. Everyday I am learning how to laugh at life’s awkward moments and at myself. I am grateful for this lighter side of me and I know my children will be better for it. Thank you Lord that I don’t have to do this mothering on my own and that you will be my portion and helper in this journey.

But then there is that glorious day when, finally, they can go to the restroom by themselves! Or at least into their own stall. Then you get to remember the meaning of the term “privacy!”

I spent most of Kayla;s pre-school years praying that the toilets wouldn’t be automatic; she was scared to death of them and it was always good for an extra five minutes of coaxing in the bathroom. She’s still not overly fond of them, but it’s better than when she was little.

lol Yeah Rockford hates the noise them make and always begs me not to flush it or to give him the count down before flushing it. There there’s the hand dryer that he also hates. Fun times 🙂
